Abstract
1,267,865. Flexible films of glass, glassceramic or ceramic-alumina compositions; refractories. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 30 Oct., 1969 [30 Oct., 1968], No. 53176/69. Headings C1J and C1M. A composition for forming thin, flexible films of glass, ceramic or glass-ceramic material comprises at least 95% by weight of a combination of the following three components :- (1) from 65 to 92% of glass, glass-ceramic or ceramic particles; (2) from 5 to 35% of an aqueous acrylic polymer emulsion binder having a pH between 8 and 10; (3) up to 15% of water; the balance comprising up to 5% of a dispersing surfactant and up to 5% of a defoaming surfactant, the total balance not exceeding 5% by weight. The balance may include up to 3% of a wetting agent, up to 5% of a thickening agent and up to 5% of a hygroscopic agent. The particles of (1) above have a mean size of from 1 to 5 microns and maximum of 100 microns, preferably maximum of 20 microns. The preferred materials are alumina or a niobate glassceramic. Examples are given. The films are formed by casting continuously on a suitable release surface such as a silicone treated paper belt, e.g. by drawing the belt upwardly through a container holding the composition. The thickness of the film is controlled by varying the belt speed, the suspension viscosity or the angle of incline of the belt. A thickness of 1.8 mils. is suggested. The coating is dried by heating and the dried film separated from the paper web. In a multi-layer capacitor, each film sheet is placed on a vacuum table and an electrode pattern screened thereon, the sheets then being stacked and placed in a furnace to burn out the volatile material and then heated to seal the stack, firing being for example at 250‹ C. for 3 hrs., 359‹ C. for 7 hrs. and 620‹ C. for 10 minutes and sealing above 700‹ C.
