Abstract
1,267,817. Ferric borate. MULLARD Ltd. 24 March, 1970 [26 March, 1969; 11 Aug., 1969], Nos. 15868/69 and 40105/69. Heading C1A. Single crystals of ferric borate (FeBO 2 ) are grown by preparing a flux melt including borate ions and one or both of lead fluoride and lead oxide such that the ratio [Pb]/([Pb]+ [B 2 O 3 ]) lies between 23 and 33 molar per cent and iron such that the ratio [Fe 2 O 3 ]/([Fe 2 O 3 ] + [Pb]) lies between 17À5 and 30 molar per cent, cooling the melt and separating the crystals therefrom. The preferred proportion of lead is between 25 and 33 molar per cent. The lead may be present as equimolar amounts of PbO and PbF 2 , when the ratio [Fe 2 O 3 ]/([Fe 2 O 3 ] + [Pb]) lies between 20 and 25 molar per cent. When the lead is present as PbO or PbF 2 the ratio [Fe 2 O 3 ]/([Fe 2 O 3 ]+[Pb]) may be 25 molar per cent. The flux may include a crystal growth habit modifying additive such as lead pyrophosphate, gallium oxide, and lanthanum oxide. The melt may also include a doping additive, e.g. Ti, V or Cr, which will have an effect on the magnetic properties of the resulting crystal. In a preferred embodiment a preliminary sintering of the flux components is carried out, the flux composition then sealed into a crucible, heated to 1150‹ C. for 24 hrs., rapidly cooled to 900‹ C., cooled at 1‹ C. per hour to 700‹ C., rapidly cooled to room temperature and then the crucible contents are leached out to retrieve the desired crystals.
