Abstract
1,267,549. Non-thrombogenic polymeric materials. MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. 17 July, 1969 [17 July, 1968], No. 36007/69. Headings C3A, C3P and C3V. A non-thrombogenic polymeric material comprises a sulphated polysaccharide anti-coagulant bonded to a polymer through an acetal or hemiacetal bridge, which is bound to the anticoagulant and to the polymer at a situs thereof previously occupied by an hydroxyl group. The anti-coagulant is suitably heparin, sodium heparin or a heparinoid and the polymer may be P.V.A., a copolymer of P.V.A, and polyvinyl acetate or a cellulose derivative, such as regenerated cellulose or an incompletely substituted cellulose ester such as the acetate, acetate butyrate, or propionate butyrate. The polymer may also be cross-linked, e.g. with an aldehyde. A polyvinyl alcohol-formal hydrogel is prepared by reacting P.V.A. and formalin in the presence of sulphuric acid.
