Abstract

1,266,956. Annealing silicon steel strip. NIPPON STEEL CORP. April 24, 1969 [April 30, 1968], No.20941/69. Heading C7D. A silicon steel strip is treated with a slurry of a metal hydroxide, containing combined water and capable of forming a glassy film by reaction with SiO 2 in the strip surface, the coating is dried without removing combined water and the strip is wound into a tight coil which is placed on an apertured base plate in the annealing furnace where it is annealed, the heat removing the combined water, causing a contraction in volume of the coating whereby passages are formed between the turns of the coil through which the furnace gas may be circulated. The hydroxide may be of an alkaline earth metal and may be produced for example by slurrying MgO with water.
