Abstract

Test tubes are transferred between a testing apparatus (26), Fig. 6 (not shown), and an endless conveyer (1) by a vertically reciprocating ram (31), the apparatus is stationary during the transfer whilst the conveyer is stationary until the tubes have been lifted clear thereof when it advances at a "slow" speed during which time it receives tubes from a rack (7) to be described hereafter and discharges tested tubes to a rack (38), faulty tubes being delivered to a roller conveyer (40). On reception of the tubes and the return of the ram (31) to the lower position, the apparatus rotates clockwise (as shown) to bring a bank of tested tubes adjacent the conveyer whereupon the conveyer is stopped and the ram (31) actuated to transfer the tubes to the conveyer. The conveyer is then advanced at a "high" speed to bring a new bank of tubes beneath the apparatus (26) and the cycle repeated. The feed device situated at the input end of the conveyer comprises a series of bell-crank levers 6 each with one limb pivoted to the end sprocket of the conveyer and the other limb engaging test tubes 8 to transfer the same to spaced article support members 32 extending between a pair of endless chains. The elbow of each lever mounts a roller 9 for engagement with a circular cam 10 eccentrically mounted on a shaft 13 whereby on rotation of the cam relative to the sprocket by means of an hydraulically actuated rack and pinion (16), (18), Fig. 5 (not shown), the radial extension of said other limb may be varied between an inoperative and an operative position for engaging said tubes and may also be varied for engagement with different size tubes. A ring 12 maintains the rollers 9 in contact with the cam 10.
