Abstract

1,266,567. Coating paper. SCHOLTENHONIG RESEARCH N.V.; SOC. ANON CUATRECASAS and R. GINESTET. 23 April, 1970 [24 April, 1969], No. 20883/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and D2] A sizing composition comprising modified (thin boiling) starch, a vinyl ester of an organic carboxylic acid having at least 7 carbon atoms, and optionally containing rosin, modified rosin, polyvinyl alcohol, urea-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde precondensate, or polyepoxide, may be employed for the internal sizing of paper by addition to an aqueous pulp slurry, and for the surface sizing and pigment coating of formed paper. The vinyl ester typically amounts to between 0.5 and 20 parts per 100 parts by weight of starch. Examples are directed to: (1) spraying an alcoholic solution of the vinyl ester of a proprietary mixture of highly branched synthetic organic carboxylic acids with 9 to 11 (optionally 9 to 19) carbon atoms on to tapioca starch rendered thin boiling by treatment in aqueous alkaline suspension with sodium hypochlorite. After evaporation of the alcohol, the sizing composition is cooked in water, diluted to a concentration of 5% and used to surface size a base paper which had been slightly internally sized with rosin size. (2) waterleaf handsheets of bleached sulphite pulp are sized with an aqueous composition comprising corn starch degraded by treatment with hydrochloric acid, the mixed vinyl esters mentioned in (1) above, and rosin fortified by addition of maleic anhydride. (3) wood-free paper is sized with an aqueous composition comprising thin-boiling corn starch, vinyl 2-ethylhexoate and modified rosin obtained by heating rosin with 5% maleic anhydride at 185-195‹C and thereafter with 10% of the reaction product of epichlorohydrin and diphenylol propane. (4) a cold swelling starch product made by drying on heated cylinders a suspension of oxidized corn starch in water containing emulsified therein the mixed vinyl esters previously mentioned, rosin modified with acrylic acid and partially neutralised, and polyvinyl alcohol. (5) offset paper is sized with a composition including oxidized corn starch, the vinyl esters of a proprietary mixture of highly branched synthetic organic carboxylic acids with 9 carbon atoms, melamine-formaldehyde resin, polyvinyl alcohol and p-toluene sulphonic acid. (6) a coating slip for pigment coating paper is made of the sizing composition given in (5) above, oxidized starch, china clay and water. The vinyl esters of benzoic, lauric and stearic acids are also mentioned.
