Abstract

1,266,496. Centrifugal separators. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. 7 May, 1969 [8 May, 1968; 28 Oct., 1968], Nos. 21880/68 and 51107/68. Heading B2P. [Also in Division Fl] In a centrifugal separator 24, Fig. 1, for separating solid particles from a fluid, the rotary casing 34 of the separator and a stationary vane assembly 30 constitute the rotor and stator respectively of a centrifugal pump by means of which cleaned fluid is removed from the separating chamber 36 formed within the casing. The casing 34 is detachably secured to one end of a shaft 25 which is supported in bearings 26 in a housing 22 and is driven by an electric motor 23. The fluid to be cleaned is supplied to the chamber 36 via a pipe 20, one end of a stationary cylinder 28, radial bores 40, the bore of a hollow portion 27 of the shaft 25 and radial bores 43. The cleaned fluid is discharged via the vane assembly 30, the cylinder 28 and a pipe 33. The cylinder 28 is rigidly secured to a radial wall 29 in the housing 22. Seals are provided at 41, 42. The casing is cleaned of accumulated solid particles by removing the housing cover 19 after releasing a bayonet coupling 44, unscrewing a screw 37 and releasing pivotable clips 38. In a modification, Fig. 3, the fluid to be cleaned is supplied to the interior of the separator casing 52 via an inlet 55 and an annular passage between a solid shaft 51 and a stationary tubular member 56. The cleaned fluid is discharged via a vane assembly 59, a passage between tubular members 56 and 57 and an outlet 58. A small fraction of the cleaned fluid passes through openings 60 into a chamber 61 whence the fluid is forced through radial openings 62 to provide lubration for a bearing 63, 64. A seal 65 prevents loss of fluid from chamber 61. Each of the separators may be used for separating magnesium hydroxide from hydroxide-laden water issuing from a magnesium/ water electric cell for driving a motor for a lawn mower and for returning the cleaned water to the cell, the motor being also used to drive the separator.
