Abstract
1,266,197. Titania pigment. BRITISH TITAN Ltd. 8 April, 1970 [18 April, 1969], No. 19914/69. Heading C1N. A titanium dioxide pigment has trimethylolethane on the surface of its particles. The amount of trimethylolethane may be up to 50% by weight of the pigment, but the preferred amount is from 0À02 to 5% by weight. In a preferred embodiment the titanium dioxide particles have in addition a coating of at least one oxide or hydrous oxide of Al, Ti, Zr, Ce or Si or a phosphate. The amount of such oxide or hydrous oxide may be from 0À5 to 10% by weight expressed as the oxide on the weight of TiO 2 . The coated titania may be prepared by mixing titania with trimethylolethane and heating the mixture to effect distribution of the trimethylolethane over the TiO 2 particles. The mixing may be done in a fluid energy mill to which the trimethylolethane may be added either before or during milling. If desired the trimethyl - olethane may be dissolved in a solvent and mixed with a dispersion of the titania in a liquid, the mixture then being milled and/or dried. Water is specified as a preferred solvent for the trimethylolethane the titania being used as an aqueous slurry. If desired the trimethylolethane may be added as a solid to the TiO 2 . It is preferred that the titania be coated with at least one hydrous oxide of Al, Ti, Zr, Ce or Si or an insoluble phosphate before being treated with trimethylolethane. The titania used may be prepared by the vapour phase oxidation of a titanium tetrahalide. The TiO 2 may be coated in a dry state with Al 2 O3, TiO 2 , CeO 2 , ZrO 2 or SiO 2 by oxidizing an oxidizable compound of Al, Ti, Cl, Zr, or Si on the vapour phase in the presence of TiO 2 particles. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 896,067.
