Abstract

1,266,140. Coating. ABRASIVE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 6 May, 1969 [11 April, 1968], No. 17474/68. Addition to 1,070,234. Heading B2E. [Also in Division B3] A method of abrading or coating the surface of a workpiece comprises forming an enclosure with the surface as a wall thereof, applying suction to the enclosure, inducing the flow of primary air into the enclosure by the removal of air in the enclosure by suction while restricting the entry of secondary air from the surrounding atmosphere into the enclosure around the periphery of the surface, entraining a slurry comprising a mixture of abrasive and liquid or a coating material in the primary air prior to the latter entering the enclosure, directing the slurry or coating material entering the enclosure against the surface and entraining the spent slurry or excess coating material, if any, in the air being removed from the enclosure by suction. The method is a modification of that described in Parent Specification, the dry abrasive being replaced by the slurry or coating material. The method may be used in the apparatus described in Parent Specification or that described in Specification No. 1,247,701 for cleaning wire. The wire may be descaled and cleaned by being passed through the apparatus described in Specification No. 1,247,701 using a slurry and then passed through similar apparatus again which applies a lubricant coating to the wire before it is passed through wire drawing dies. The coating materials may be of liquid or fluent nature or pulverulent or may be paint and may be applied to the surface of a sheet, plate or rod or to the internal surface of a tube.
