Abstract

Air &c. heating furnaces.-A gas-fired apparatus for heating air and other gaseous fluids consists of a tubular member which leads combustion products from a combustion chamber at its upper end to a discharge outlet at a lower level; the tube or tubular member is enclosed in a duct through which the gas to be heated passes in a contrary direction. Fig. 1 shows a heater comprising a combustion chamber a supplied with a correctly proportioned combustible gaseous mixture by an injector b and communicating with a descending duct d surrounded by an annular air &c. duct f, up which the air &c. to be heated passes to an outlet g. In a modification, Fig. 2, the air &c. to be heated passes up an annulus f<1>, and away through passages f<4>, f<5> in and surrounding the combustion chamber a<1>, from which hot gases pass downwards through ducts d<1>, i in and surrounding the annulus f<1>; the combustion chamber mav be within the inner of the two tubes. In another modification, Fig. 5, the combustion products pass down the annulus k, and the air passes upwards through ducts d', i<1> in and surrounding it. The outlet pipe l<1> mav run through a flue or tunnel m. In another modification, Fig. 11, several combustion chambers a<3>, (ten are shown), fed with gas and air mixtures by devices w, discharge their combustion products downwardly into ducts d<5>, d<6>, d<7>, d<8>, d<9>, d<10>, and thence to an outlet o. Air enters bv a duct u, and is circulated past the ducts by interdigitated baffles q - - q<3>, which stretch nearly across the casing r from side to side of it. The air passes out at the top of the casing above the combustion chambers a', where a set of easily removable covers is fitted.
