Abstract
1,264,318. Drying of lumber. J. H. PLESS. 4 Sept., 1969 [6 Sept., 1968 (2)], Nos. 42609/68 and 42610/68. Heading F4G. A method of drying boards or planks of lumber in which the lumber is heated to reduce the moisture content to the desired final level, including passing the lumber between pairs of rollers 7a arranged to hold the lumber in a fixed plane for at least that part of the drying process after the fibre saturation point of the lumber has been reached, each pair of the rollers being either fixed or resiliently biased toward one another such that substantially no compressive force is applied to the correctly sawn lumber moving between the rollers, whereby the lumber sets in a straightened condition. The rollers are located in sections of an electronic kiln, said sections 4a alternating with chambers filled with microwave radiation 3a such that the lumber is intermittently exposed to the microwave radiation. The microwave chambers are onethird of the length of the roller section. The lumber passes from one section to another through slots in the separating walls. Each roller section includes means for spraying the lumber passing through the section to moisten the surface of lumber and thereby control the rate of evaporation.
