Abstract

126,429. Baggs, C. E., and Thompson, S. J. April 29, 1918. Gravity-feed lubricators.-A lubricating system for the motors of motor-vehicles &c. is provided with means for automatically supplying additional oil to the crank-case under the control of a thermostat and for returning the extra oil to a tank when heating has been reduced. Oil from the crank-case A is raised by a pump a to a tank c from which the engine bearings are supplied by a pipe d. An overflow communicates with a second tank h provided with three overflows n<1>, m, m<1> at different levels leading into a pipe n communicating with the crank-case. The overflows m, m<1> are fitted with valves operated in succession by a thermostat o, so that, when overheating occurs, additional oil is supplied in two stages to the crank-case. The valves are closed by a spring, and the tank h then refills from the overflow h'. In a modification, the valves are operated by solenoids controlled by the thermostat.
