Abstract

1,264,045. Uses of luminescence. MONSANTO CO. 3 Feb., 1970 [4 Feb., 1969; 23 April, 1969], No. 5035/70. Heading C4S. A liquid scintillation composition for counting thermal neutrons, or gamma rays comprises at least 30% by weight of a scintillator solution of an aromatic solvent, a scintillation solute and an ethoxylated alkyl phenol wherein the alkyl substituent contains 7 to 16 carbon atoms and a loading agent comprising an aqueous solution of a compound of an elementhaving either a sufficiently large neutron capture cross-section to absorb thermal neutrons and undergo an exoergic nuclear reaction or an atomic weightgreater than 20. The constituents of the scintillator solution are those disclosed in Specification 1,264,044 and benzene fluor MSB. The preferred solute is PPO and POPOP for thermal neutrons and PPO and MSB for γ-rays. Loading agents for counting thermal neutrons include compounds containing B<SP>10</SP>, Li<SP>6</SP>, Cd<SP>113</SP>, Gd and Sm for example Na and Li borate boric acid, BF 3 , Li acetate, SmCl 3 , SmBr 3 and Cd acetate, bromide and iodate. Agents for γ-ray counting include halides, acetates and nitrates of Cd, Pb, Zn, Cs, Ba, nitrites; nitrates and acetates of Ag and Au, bromides and iodides of Na, K and Li. The composition is prepared by mixing the scintillator solution and loading agent to form a solution or gel.
