Abstract
126,334. Brown, P., and Bostock, F. J. Dec. 20. 1916. Reversing-gearing. - In reversing or quick-return motions, specially applicable for driving the saddle carrying the cutters for cutting the teeth of doublehelical wheels, two epicyclic gears are employed, one member of each gear being connected to the driven shaft and one member of each gear being interconnected through gearing which may be used to actuate a secondary driven part such as a feed-shaft. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the main drive of the machine drives a spur-wheel k integral with a pinion b<4> gearing with planet-pinions b loose on arms c<1> secured on the shaft d, which drives the cutters through screw-and-nut means. The pinions b gear with a wheel b<3> geared through change-gearing g<1> to a spindle g, which may drive the feed motion and is geared through a shaft f and worm to a worm-wheel e turning with a pinion a<2> geared to planet-pinions a loose on the arms c'. A pinion a<3> gears with the pinions a and carries a wheel i gearing with a wheel j forming one of a train of gears controlled by a dividing-motion, which train is automatically stopped when the slow cutting-stroke is required, the shaft d then rotating slowly in the reverse direction to the wheel k. For the quick return stroke, the wheel j is automatically released and, the resistance to motion of the shaft g<2> being greater than that of the shaft d, the wheel b<3> remains stationary, the shaft then rotating more quickly in the forward direction. The two epicyclic trains may be separated, each planet-carrier being separately connected to the shaft d. The members of the trains may be connected up in different order to the various driving and driven parts. Spur gearing may be substituted for bevel gearing.
