A washing machine comprises, mounted in a chamber 6, an outer tub 2 within which is a substantially imperforate tub 47, both having their axes vertical during washing, means for causing washing motion of liquid and articles in both tubs and liquid inlet means 46 from which liquid is diverted to tub 47 until it is filled after which liquid enters tub 2 only. Perforated tub 2 has a heavy balance ring 8 and is rotatable for spin drying. Mounted within drum 2 is an oscillatory agitator 14 mounted on a shaft which rotates with tub 2 during spin-drying. A reversible motor 21 which rotating in one direction drives the agitator and in the other direction drives drum 2 for spin-drying also drives pump 27 which comprises two units 28, 29 operating respectively during spin-drying and washing. These units have inlets respectively in the lowest part of tub 6 and another part of tub 6 and outlets respectively to a drain and to a nozzle 35. Spinning may be delayed until unit 28 has lowered the liquid level sufficiently. The tub, motor &c are mounted on a bracket 36 carrying a counterweight 37 suspended by rigid members 38 each connected to a cable supported from the top of the machine. Tub 47 fits on to agitator 14 and has an outer wall with external vanes 53 and upwardly extending pipes 56 connected to bent tubes 57 with outlets 60 through which liquid passes during spinning. The discharge from horn 46, which is supplied with liquid at a predetermined temperature, is controlled by a cover forming a labyrinth passage through which liquid flows until tub 47 is full after which it overflows into tub 6. The discharge from nozzle 35 always passes over tub 47. A lint filter 72, 73 is provided. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 939,526.
