The invention comprises compounds of formula which are prepared by cyclizing an alphasubstituted-tetronic acid of formula with an acid optionally in the presence of an inert organic solvent, wherein R<SP>1</SP> is H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , R<SP>2'</SP> is H or CH 3 , R<SP>3</SP> is H, CH 3 , C 2 H 5 or iso-C 3 H 7 , R<SP>4</SP> is H, alkoxy, OH and the hydrolysable carboxylic acid esters thereof, cyclopentyloxy, cyclohexyloxy, tetrahydropyran-2<SP>1</SP>- yloxy, tetrahydrofuran-2<SP>1</SP>-yloxy, OSO 2 OX and OPO(OX) 2 , wherein X is H or an alkali metal atom, and R<SP>5</SP> is as R<SP>4</SP> or alkyl.
