A composition which when dissolved in water, carbonated or non-carbonated, provides a palatable, non-irritating beverage to replenish body fluids and minerals lost through perspiration, comprises at least one soluble sodium salt, at least one soluble potassium salt, one of the salts being a chloride and the chloride ion concentration being less than the sodium ion concentration, a preservative, at least one non-toxic edible acidulant compound, and at least one sweetening agent which is the major compound (at least 80% by weight) of the composition, the sodium-potassium ion concentration having a molar ratio of at least 5:3, preferably between 5:3 and 5:4. When the chloride is sodium chloride, the potassium salt is a salt other than a halide, the chloride ion concentration being greater than the potassium ion concentration, and the preservative is a sodium salt other than a halide. The composition is dissolved in water to provide 13-31 mEq per litre sodium ions, up to 23 mEq per litre chloride ions and 8-20 mEq per litre potassium ions. Sodium salts: chloride, bicarbonate, citrate and phosphate. Potassium salts: bicarbonate, citrate, phosphate and chloride. Preservatives: sodium benzoate. Acidulants: citric, fumaric, malic and tartaric acids. Sweetening agents: sucrose, lactose, maltose, dextrose, fructose and galactose, preferably a mixture of sucrose and dextrose. The composition may further include calcium acetate, gluconate or lactate, magnesium acetate or sulphate, Vitamins B 1 , B 12 and C , hydrogenated vegetable oil, specified flavouring agents and food colouring.
