Abstract

Bristles having a filler, such as an abrasive filler, are produced by heating a thermoplastic material to above its melting point in a screw extruder 12, feeding the melt to a second screw extruder 26, where it is mixed with the filler and then feeding the mixture to an extrusion die 42 where it is formed into a plurality of monofilaments. The monofilaments are passed through a bath 46 where they are cooled and solidified and are then formed into a ribbon 52 as herein defined. This ribbon is stretched over a first set of godet rolls 54 which have a replaceable, wear-resistant lining 53, and is then treated with hot water, dried and stretched again over a second set of rolls 66, protected as is the first set, and then crimped and the filaments cut into individual bristles. The filler may be present to between 1 and 50% of the material leaving the second extruder and, if abrasive, is preferably between 36 and 1000 mesh. Suitable fillers are, for example, aluminium oxide, chopped glass fibres, asbestos, diamond or ceramic particles. The wear resistant lining for the stretching godet rolls may be any suitable metal or non- metal, but copper is preferred. In an example, bristles are prepared from a mixture of nylon 6 and nylon 6,6, having aluminium oxide filling.
