Abstract

In a method of moulding at least two articles, e.g. commutators, simultaneously, two moulds 17, 17A, each having at least one moulding cavity 27 therein and a sprue 16 or 16A extending through an end face 15 or 15A, are placed end to end in a structure 40 located between press platens so that when plastics moulding material is supplied to the space between the separated end faces and pressure is applied, the end faces are brought into abutment and material is forced into the cavities via the sprues, and a common moulding material discard space is formed between the end faces. Moulding material may be fed to the space between the end faces via an aperture in the wall of the supporting structure and arranged so that as the upper mould is lowered during the compression it cuts off the flow. In the modification of Fig. 5 the moulding material is initially placed in the mould, cavity 79 of each mould before they are placed in abutment within a structure 73; when pressure is applied by the press between the mould parts 72, mould cores 76 are brought into abutment with their end parts 74 to compress the material and force excess through the sprues 77 into a common discard space. A rotary press may be employed comprising a number of pairs of platens spaced about a vertical axis, between each pair of which an assembly as above described is located and thereby moved through curing and removal stations.
