Abstract
1,261,792. Polymerizing ethylene. SCHOLVEN-CHEMIE A.G. 14 March, 1969 [20 April, 1968], No. 13616/69. Heading C3P. Ethylene is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst which is suspended or dissolved in an inert diluent and which comprises (A) the reaction and reduction product of a mixture of titanium (IV) and vanadium (V) compounds with an organoaluminium compound of the formula AlR 2 X, wherein R is a hydrocarbon group having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and X is a halogen, alkoxy or mercapto group or hydrogen, and (B) an organometallic compound of Groups I to II of the Mendeleef Periodic System of elements, the concentration of the titaniumvanadium catalyst (A) being between 0À1 and 25 mg./l., the concentration of the organometallic compound (B) being between 10 and 100 mg./l. and the ethylene partial pressure being between 3 and 60 kp./square cm. In the examples ethylene and butylene are polymerized in the presence of catalysts prepared from npropyl titanate, vanadium oxychloride, diethyl aluminium chloride, triethylaluminium, diisobutylaluminium fluoride and titanium tetrachloride, heptane, hexane and hydrogen and the polymerization mixture irradiated with a Co-60 source.
