Abstract

1,261,627. Contour-milling. PRECISION GRINDING Ltd. 6 Oct., 1970 [15 Oct., 1969], No. 50582/69. Heading B3K. An attachment for a contour-copying machine tool comprises a pantograph 11, a stylus 12 mounted in a holder 13, 14, having rods 15 which are adapted to slide through blocks 16 connected to a pattern table 10, an hydraulic ram 17, for moving holder 13, 14, through blocks 16, and a control valve 18 for controlling the speed and direction of movement of the holder and stylus. In operation, the attachment is mounted in a hand-operated die-sinking machine so that the stylus, which may be oversize, is almost touching the pattern. Valve 18 is actuated and ram 17 moves the stylus, and with it the tool, on its first stroke, the speed of movement being determined by the operator pivoting valve spool 18a through a control member 19. The fluid supply to the ram is reversed at the end of the stroke, the pantograph is traversed, and a further stroke is provided. The operator works right across the pattern with the stylus almost touching the latter, and the work blank is rough machined. This roughing operation continues and then the attachment is replaced by a finishing stylus and pantograph. The form produced may be a recess or a projection.
