Abstract

1,261,609. Separating acid gases from hydrocarbons. LUMMUS CO. 13 Oct., 1969 [17 Oct., 1968], No. 50107/69. Heading BIL. In removing acid gases from a gaseous hydrocarbon-containing effluent containing acid gases and dienes as impurities e.g. obtained from the pyrolysis of ethane, propane, naphtha or gas oil, the hydrocarbon effluent is fed via line 10 into absorbing tower 11 where it contacts countercurrently with an aqueous amine solution, e.g. hexylamine, dipropylamine, propylene diamine, trimethylenediamine, ethylene diamine, triaminopropane, triethanolamine, dihydroxypropylamine, diethylamino ethyl alcohol, monoethanolamine, benzylamine, phenylethylamine, cyclohexylamine or cyclopentylamine, fed via line 12. The acid gases and dienes are absorbed into the amine and acid gas free hydrocarbon is withdrawn at 13. A hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. toluene or a low molecular weight naphtha, is added via line 14 and the resulting mixture led off at 15 and via mixer 17, and coalescer 19 to a settling chamber 21 maintained at a lower pressure than the absorbing tower 11 by a control valve 20. An aqueous amine phase essentially free of hydrocarbons is withdrawn through line 23, through heat exchanger 24 to a regenerator 25 where acid gas is withdrawn at 26 whilst the purified amine is recycled to line 12. The hydrocarbon phase is skimmed from the settler 21 and passed to a low pressure still 32 via heat exchanger 31. Gases released from the settler 21 are introduced via line 34 into the still 32 to aid in the recovery of the dienes. A diene overhead is withdrawn through 35 passed to condenser 36 and reflux drum 37. The liquid portion separated in reflux 37 is recycled to the still 32 whilst the gaseous portion is withdrawn by a steam ejector 41 or vacuum pump. A hydrocarbon solvent bottoms essentially free of dienes is then passed via 43 and the heat exchanger 31 into line 14 for recycling. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) wherein heavier hydrocarbons are to be removed in addition to dienes an initial separation of the heavier hydrocarbon phase may be effected before the addition of the hydrocarbon solvent. The separated hydrocarbon phase is added to the hydrocarbon phase formed after the addition of the solvent.
