Abstract

1,259,790. Centrifugal separator. BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc. 5 March, 1969 [18 March, 1968], No. 9661/71. Divided out of 1,259,789. Heading B2P. In the centrifuge described in the parent specification the upper end portion 165 of the head of the stator of the distributor-collector 89 is supported for movement in mutually perpendicular directions in a removable bearing mechanism 157 in response to stresses imparted to the stator during rotation of the rotor. The portion 165 is held in a slot 163 between fingers 161 and 162 of a retainer 159 which is mounted in a recess 166 formed in a central section 168 of a telescopic bar 167 for sliding movement longitudinally of the bar, the stator end portion 165 being movable in the slot 163 in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the bar. The bar has end sections 158, 160 at least one of which (158 as shown) is telescopically connected to the central section 168. The end sections support fittings 169, 177 having hooks 171, 181 which project into an aperture formed in the lower end of a skirt 173 supported on an annular pad 175 in the top opening of the centrifuge housing 17. To remove the distributor collector 89 from the centrifuge assembly, the bar 167 is contracted to disengage the hooks 171, 181 from the skirt 173. Thereafter the stator is removed from the slot 163 and the distributorcollector lifted out. The end section 158 consists of plates 185, 189 slidable on central section 168 and riveted to a spacer 187. A apertures 203, 205 in the plates 185, 187 and hence on the fitting 169 which is integral with the plate 185 so as to hold the bar in position when assembled in the centrifuge. Latch means 197 is mounted transversely of the bar 167 and comprises a spring biased rod 201 extending through a slot 223 in the section 168 and apertures 203, 205 in the plates 185, 197 and a bearing cap 207 having a reduced portion 206. Within slot 223, adjacent plate 189, is an annular shoulder 229 within the annulus of which the portion 206 of the cap 207 is biased by the spring 219. While the parts are as shown in Fig. 2, contraction of bar 167 is limited by engagement of portion 206 and shoulder 229. The contraction is not enough to permit removal of bar 167 from the centrifuge but adequate for accommodating variation in the diametric distance across the skirt 173 when the bar is in position within the centrifuge. To remove bar 167, rod 201 is pushed laterally until the spring-retaining cup 213 engages plate 205 when portion 206 will be removed from slot 223 allowing the rod 201 to engage the wall 225 as the bar contracts sufficiently to permit its removal from the centrifuge.
