Abstract

1,259,628. Polyarylenepolyether compositions. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 21 March, 1969 [21 March, 1968], No. 15000/69. Headings C3R and C3T. A polymeric mixture comprises 99À1 to 1% by weight of a polyarylene polyether having units of formula where E is the residuum of a dihydric phenol and E<SP>1</SP> is the residuum of a benzenoid compound having an inert electron withdrawing group in at least one of the positions ortho and para to the valence bond, both residua being valently bonded to the ether oxygen atoms 0À1 to 99% by weight of a siloxane-polyarylene polyether copolymer comprising (a) at least two siloxane units of formula R b SiO 4-b / 2 where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group which may be substituted, a divalent organic group or ether oxygen and b is 1 to 3, the siloxane chain containing at least one unit where R is a divalent organic group or ether oxygen which links the chain to a polyarylene polyether chain by a carbon to silicon bond when R is a divalent organic group or by an aryloxy to silicon bond when R is ether oxygen, and (b) at least one polyarylene polyether chain having units of formula where D and D<SP>1</SP> are defined in the same manner as E and E<SP>1</SP>. In Examples polyarylene polyethers prepared from 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane and 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dichlorodiphenylsulphone, from 4,41 - dihydroxydiphenylsulphone and 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dichlorodiphenylsulphone, from the bisphenol of acetophenone and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dichlorodiphenylsulphone, from the bisphenol of vinyl cyclohexene and 4,41 - dichlorodiphenylsulphone, from hydroquinone and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dichlorodiphenylsulphone, from 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dihydroxybenzophenone and 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dichlorodiphenylsulphone, from 4,41 - dichlorodiphenylsulphone and from 2,2<SP>1 </SP>- bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane and 4,4<SP>1</SP> - difluorobenzophenone, are mixed with block copolymers obtained by reacting -OH terminated polyarylene polyethers (obtained from bisphenol A and 4,41- dichlorodiphenylsulphone) with bis - (dimethylamine) terminated polydimethylsiloxane and with a bis-(isocyanatopropyl) terminated copolymer containing dimethylsiloxane units and vinylmethylsiloxane units, and a block copolymer obtained by reacting a chlorine terminated polyarylene polyether (obtained from 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dihydroxybenzophenone and 4,4<SP>1</SP>- dichlorodiphenylsulphone) with a bis - mercaptoalkyl - terminated polymethylphenylsiloxane; in one instance finely divided silica is added to the composition.
