Abstract

1,259,318. Distance measurement. CARL ZEISS JENA VEB. 17 June, 1969, No. 30668/69. Heading H4D. Specification describes an electromagnetic wave distance measuring apparatus including a modulator transmitter M for transmitting a modulated electromagnet wave and a detector/ receiver D which receives the modulated wave after reflection thereof at a distant reflector RE. The detector modulation signal is fed via a circuit of unity loop gain to the control input of the modulator M. The path of the wave and signal thus form a self-oscillating loop, oscillating at a frequency f E depending on the total length of said path such that: when n is an integer. Part of the total path length is contained in the electronic circuitry and is generally unknown. To overcome this a variable phase shifter F is inserted in the modulation signal path and a short circuiting reflector R K is provided at a position defining the near limit of the sought distance. With reflector R K in place a new oscillating loop is produced, resulting in a modulation frequency f k , whereby: c Short circuit distance=n2 - 2fk Delay E is thus adjusted until f E = f K =f whereby: Sought distance 2s= Total path length - short circuit distance = (n 1 - n 2 )c/2f 2f A frequency meter Z determines frequencies f E and f K and may be calibrated in range. The electromagnetic wave may be light and the modulator/transmitter a GaAs diode.
