Abstract

An image 10 (Fig. 2) having components parts (11, 12, 13, Fig. 1, not shown) the size of which are to be determined, is optically scanned line by line, clock pulses being accumulated when one of the component parts is traversed. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 a television camera or light beam scanner 16 scans the image 10 in one direction, pulses from a source 20 being fed to a counter, computer or printer via gates 17, 18 enabled by an "initiate frame scanning signal" and a "line scan signal" and gate 19 enabled when one of the component parts is sensed. A prism 23 rotates the scanning axis through 90 degrees so that the image may be scanned in two directions. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the image is moved (by motors 33, 34 controlling the gates 17, 18) in two perpendicular directions in front of a stationary photo-cell the output from which controls the third gate (19). Alternatively the photo-cells may be placed between an oscillating or rotating mirror scanning a stationary image. Instead of rectilinear scanning a spiral scanning raster may be used.
