1,258,312. Coating cores by extrusion. V. SHABTOK, and J. P. SHANOK. 1 Feb., 1969, No. 5582/69. Heading B5A. In the extrusion coating of strip material 26, plastics is fed to a chamber 45 in crosshead 18 via lined cylinder 11 and breaker plate 13, the size and nature of chamber 45 being such that the plastics therewithin becomes substantially free-flowing, thereby preventing buckling or other distortion of strip 26. Chamber 45 defines an enlarged space adjacent passageway 23 as compared to the space adjacent die plate 37 and is provided with an air vent 48 and/or is open ended (as shown). Strip 26 is hauled through tapered orifice 47, excess plastics being removed from the strip by scraper edge 51. Such excess material circulates as indicated by arrows 52, 53 to form flow rings 50 which support the strip adjacent die orifice 47 and promote uniform depoaition on the strip. The strip material may be of metal, e.g. aluminium foil 0À5 mm. thick, textiles or paper and plastics specifically mentioned are cellulose acetate and cellulose acetate butyrate. Insulated electrical conductors may also be made comprising a band or a plurality of spaced parallel wires.
