Abstract

Apparatus for binding glass sheets comprises a pair of complementary dies 5 and 6 having porous, curved faces 3 and 4 through which heated gas (supplied by ducts 9 and 10 and heating chambers 13 and 14) passes so that, when a plate 20 is placed between them and is bent by moving the dies towards one another on carriages 23 and 24 continuous cushions of hot gas on both faces of the sheet prevent it coming into direct contact with the dies and also prevents heat loss from the glass. The sheet may be bent in one or two dimensions and may initially be flat or bent, e.g. by preliminary bending by bending elements 30 and 31 attached to one of the dies. Also, the plate may be preheated or heated to bending temperature in the die by the heated gas from the die faces.
