Abstract

1,257,724. Moulding expanded granules. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 24 June, 1969 [15 July, 1968], No. 31923/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] An extrusion process for continuously preparing expandable compositions containing polystyrene polymers, styrene copolymers with less than 1% by wt. divinyl benzene or graft copolymers of styrene with less than 20% by weight of elastomeric substances comprises charging the polymeric substances into an extruder together with citric, oxalic or tartaric acid or an alkali metal salt thereof in amount 0À2 to 1À0% by weight with respect to the polymeric substances, contacting the molten products with an expanding agent comprising an halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon of boiling point in the range - 30‹ to + 30‹ C. in amount ranging from 5 to 10% by weight, with respect to the polymeric substances in the extruder, at a temperature of 190‹ to 230‹ C. and maintaining the pressure sufficiently high to keep the expanding agent in the liquid phase, homogenizing the polymeric substances and expanding agent while lowering the temperature of the mixture within the extruder such that the temperature of the mass at the discharge end of the extruder is 100‹ to 130‹ C., and granulating the homogenized product leaving the extruder, the temperature being simultaneously lowered to ambient temperature. The granulation may be effected by forcing the product discharged from the extruder through a foraminated plate and then cutting the resulting threads cooled by a cold water spray.
