Abstract

In a gas laser, the active medium is a mixture of CO 2 , N 2 and He in the ratio of 1 : 2 : 20, and the mixture is pumped through the laser discharge tube at a pressure of 50-60 mm. Hg and a velocity exceeding 100 m/sec. The resonator comprises two concave mirrors, one of gold plated stainless steel, the other of partially transmitting germanium. The output may be be attenuated by a rotating slotted disc and germanium plates if it is desired to use a thermopile to measure the output power. A tube of about one metre length and of narrow bore will give a single transverse mode output.
