Abstract
1,257,494. Injection moulding. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 8 April, 1969 [8 April, 1968], No. 17762/69. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B8] An article having a weakened portion, e.g. an easy-opening container is made by injecting thermoplastic material into two parts of a mould cavity and causing contiguous edges of the two portions of thermoplastic material to fuse together so as to form a line of inherent weakness. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, an end cap 10 for a container comprises an annular portion 11 joined by a weakened portion 9 to a central removable portion 12. The annular portion 11 is formed by injection through gates 54, 56 and the central portion by simultaneous injection through a gate 55 into a mould 26, 27. Alternatively, valves V 1 , V 2 , V 3 may be used so that one portion of the article is formed before the other. Mould part 27 has an annular rib 50 to form the weakened portion 9. An annular venting chamber 24 is connected by ports 29 to a vacuum source (not shown). The gap (51) between the web 50 and the lower mould part may be so small as to prevent plastic material entering it, in which case the build-up of pressure in the mould cavities is used to cause relative axial shifting of the mould parts when full. Alternatively the gap may be initially completely closed. In Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), the weakened portion is positioned midway between opposite faces of the can end which may be provided with an annular bead or beads (74, 75 or 84), on the adjacent portions. Fig. 11 shows a mould for making an end cap having a discontinuous weakened portion formed by a rib 124. Injection is effected through a single gate 131, the injected stream dividing into two portions, one to fill the annular cavity 130 and the other the cavity 128. In Fig. 13 the weakened portion is generally cylindrical in form, the annular and central mould cavity portions being displaced axially. Mould portion 157 is movable against the biasing force of springs 161, 162, or fluid motors.
