Abstract
1,257,431. Unsaturated epoxy alcohols and ethers. F. HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO. A.G. 12 Dec., 1968 [18 Dec., 1967], No. 24559/70. Divided out of 1,255,650. Heading C2C. Novel epoxides of the formula in which R is hydrogen or C 1-6 alkyl, R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-6 alkyl, phenyl or di-(C 1 _ 6 alkyl) aminoalkyl and A and B are each hydrogen or together represent a carbon-carbon bond or an oxygen bridge, provided that when R is hydrogen and A and B a carbon-carbon bond, R<SP>1</SP> is not a methyl group, are prepared by reacting a ketone of the formula in which A<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>1</SP> are each hydrogen or together represent a carbon-carbon bond, with acetylene, partially hydrogenating the reaction product and either subjecting the partially hydrogenated product to an allylic rearrangement in the presence of an alkanol and an acid and epoxidizing the resulting compound, or converting the partial hydrogenation product into a primary halide with allylic rearrangement by treatment with an agent known and used for the replacement of an alcoholic hydroxy group by halogen in the presence of double bonds without affecting the latter, e.g. PBr 3 , reacting the halide with an alkali metal alcoholate and epoxidizing the resulting compound, or reacting the primary halide with an alkali metal alkanoate, epoxidizing the ester product, subjecting the latter to hydrolysis and reacting the resultant primary alcohol with an alkyl halide. Epoxidation is effected by reaction with an organic peracid or treatment with N-bromosuccimimide, water and a base. Examples relate to the preparation of 10,11-epoxy-3,7,11- trimethyldodeca - 2,6 - dien - 1 - ol and the ethyl ether thereof, 10,11-epoxy-3,7,11-trimethyltrideca - 2,6 - dien - 1 - ol and the methyl and ethyl ethers thereof and the appropriate intermediates. The alcohols and ethers may be isolated as the various cis and/or trans isomers. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,209,904.
