Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and C3] An abrasive gear-shaped finishing tool 6 comprises a body 34 having a plurality of tooth elements 8 for meshing engagement with a workpiece 10, each element including a working face consisting of a bonded matrix, at least a portion of the elements being of a composite construction wherein the working face thereof is divided into a plurality of sections 14, 16 each having a different abrasive finishing characteristic in order to impart selected variations in the abrasive finishing section on the workpiece. In use, the finishing tool is in tight meshing engagement with the workpiece and is rotated in crossed axis relationship therewith. The tool is manufactured in a mould consisting of a base-plate 26 and a master internal gear 28. A hub 12, which may be of metal or synthetic material, is secured to a centre stud 30 and has a plastic rim section 34. The space between the rim section and master gear is filled with a liquid mixture of a resin bonding agent, filler and/or abrasive particles, the abrasive being selected according to the degree of abrading required to be effected by the dedendum portions of the teeth. After curing, the addendum portions of the teeth are removed by machining, for example on a lathe, to a circle 22 (shown dotted, Fig. 2) which is slightly eccentric to the pitch circle 20. The tool is then replaced in the mould and the addendum portions of the teeth formed by an abrasive mixture, the abrasive being according to the degree of abrading required by the addendum portions of the teeth. A mechanical interlock 24 may be provided between the addendum and dedendum portions.
