Abstract
1,257,064. Automatic weight control. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. Jan.6, 1969 [Jan.4, 1968], No.734/69. Heading G3R. In a system for producing from a solid a predetermined number of slices having a desired batch weight the difference between the desired batch weight and a batch weight computed from the weight of a number of slices less than the predetermined number is utilized to modify the thickness of the remainder of the batch in a corrective sense. In Fig. 3, a loaf 10, e.g. of bacon, is fed forward by a hydraulic ram 32 and cut by a knife 13 into slices 18 which are grouped into batches containing a predetermined number. Each batch is assembled on a weighing conveyor 16 before being transferred to a conveyor 19. As each slice is deposited on conveyor 16, a transducer Ws and a counter 20 apply electric signals, corresponding to the weight and number of slices present, to a computer 25 which is programmed by signals 33, 34 corresponding to total number and weight of slices desired in the batch. The computer 25 calculates what the total batch weight is likely to be and compares it with the desired weight so that any difference is effective to adjust a valve 27 which alters the velocity at which the loaf is fed. The thickness of the remaining slices of the batch is thus adjusted in a sense tending to give the desired batch weight. Modification of the control by rate and exponential components is referred to.
