Abstract
1,256,688. Making abrasive tools; extruding. INSTITUT FIZIKI VYSOKIKH DAVLENY. 2 May, 1970, No. 21218/70. Headings B3A, B3D and B3P. A method of making an abrasive tool comprises filling the spaces in a blank 2 with an abrasive filler 3, closing the spaces, placing the blank in a chamber 11 having a shaping hole 14, filling the chamber with a pressure medium, building up a pressure in the medium to deform the blank by extrusion through the shaping hole, and removing part of the blank material to uncover the abrasive material. The blank may be of metallic, such as copper, or ceramic material and is formed with spaces which are filled with the abrasive, the blank being in the form of a cylinder, a hole-grinding tool (Figs. 3 and 4) or an abrasive drill (Figs. 5 and 6). The blank is closed by a plug 16 and placed in the chamber 11 which has a part 13 with a shaping hole 12 and a hole 15 for the pressure mechanism which extrudes the blank through the hole 12 which may be of circular, rectangular, or other profile. After extruding, part of the blank is removed to expose the abrasive. The abrasive filler may consist of abrasive grains in a powdered material, such as a low-melting metal, e.g. tin, or a molybdenum powder. The abrasive may be diamond, cubical boron nitride, molybdenum, or tungsten. The blank may be heated during extrusion and an inert gas, such as argon, may be used as the pressure medium.
