A stacking device comprises a conveyer 2 for advancing sheets or groups of sheets S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP> and S<SP>3</SP> towards a stacking pen 6 and a pair of axially reciprocable pinch rollers 4 arranged to deliver alternate sheets or sets to offset positions in the pen. The pen may comprise a base which descends as the stack accumulates.
