[Also in Divisions F3 and F4] Discharge of a cylindrical cartridge 4 containing a pressurized volatile fumigant e.g. ethylene oxide is effected by loading the cartridge into a cylindrical space 5 formed in a chamber 1 and of height about half that of the cartridge 4 and having an outlet duct 7 provided with an upstanding cutter portion 8, closing the upper end 3 of the chamber by means of a screw threaded inverted cup-shaped cover 21, 16 formed with a collar 22 which is forced against a rubber sealing ring 14 and which ring is connected by a resilient sealing hollows 24 to a slidable pressure plate 17 above the upper end of the cartridge 4 and finally by applying downward force on a pin 19 projecting upwardly from the plate 17 through the cover end cap 21 thereby puncturing the base of the cartridge. The lower end of the cartridge is recessed to engage upstanding locating ring 9 in the base of chamber 1 and any discharged fluid collecting in the chamber base outside ring 9 passes through a duct 25 Fig. 2 into duct 7. The latter extends through a side portion 12 of the chamber 1 secured to the wall 13 of a room to be sterilized.
