Abstract
1,255,860. Decanting valve. I. J. R. COOKMAN. 3 July, 1970 [7 July, 1969], No. 34096/ 69. Heading BID. [Also in Division F2] A valve, which is particularly suitable for use in the dewatering of sewage sludge by decantation, comprises a cylindrical shell 3 having a plurality of ports 11 formed therein, the ports being arranged in a helical pattern, and a square shaft 13 which is arranged for rotation within the shell and which has disposed thereon a plurality of spaced valving members 23, each valving member being arranged to co-operate with a given port and being retained between adjacent valving members by means of spacer elements 24. The valving members each comprise upper and lower plates 25 which are welded to a square section sleeve 26 that fits over shaft 13, are welded to a broken peripheral band 27, and are welded to U-shaped bands 30, the arrangement being such that each valving member has two diametrically opposed recesses 28 of which only one is open at the member ends and at the member periphery. The valving members are so arranged upon the shaft that the open recesses are all aligned and, accordingly, rotation, of the shaft places one open recess adjacent a port 11, (Fig.-3, not shown). The shaft 13 is carried by a support 14, 15 which, by way of rollers 16; rides on the top of shell 3, and is operable by a handwheel having a position indicator 22. When disposed in a sludge containing vessel 2, drainage of liquid from a given level in the vessel is achieved by appropriate positioning of the shaft 13 and hence selection of a given port 11 and associated recessed valving member 23. Liquid so supplied to the shell is drained therefrom via pipe 7 and valve 8, the latter valve being operable by a handwheel 9. The shell may have ribs 11 on its outer periphery to prevent vertical flow of liquid near the shell and in the vessel.
