Abstract

1,255,575. Polymerizing ethylene. CHISSO CORP. 16 Feb., 1970 [21 Feb., 1969], No. 7411/70. Heading C3P. Ethylene may be polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) an organo aluminium compound and (2) a second reaction product obtained by reacting a transition metal compound below 110‹ C. in the presence of an aromatic compound with a first reaction product obtained by reacting a hydroxide of a Group II metal with a trivalent metal halide below 110‹ C. Specified hydroxides are magnesium and calcium hydroxides; trivalent metal halides are aluminium and ferric chlorides; aromatic compounds are toluene, xylene, mesitylene, durene, dimethyl aniline, nitrobenzene, chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, anisole and phenols; transition metal compounds are titanium tetrachloride, vanadium tetrachloride, vanadium oxytrichloride, chromyl chloride and titanium tetra-n-butoxide ; and organo aluminium compounds are trimethyl and triethyl aluminium, ethyl aluminium sesquichloride, diethyl aluminium chloride and ethyl aluminium dichloride. Ethylene may be copolymerized, e.g. with propylene, butene - 1,3 - methylpentene - 1,4- methylpentene - 1, hexene - 1, heptene - 1 and styrene; optionally in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon solvent. Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene in hexane in the presence of hydrogen and catalysts formed from triethyl aluminium, magnesium hydroxide, aluminium trichloride, titanium tetrachloride and (1) toluene (2, 6 and 7) xylene (3) anisole (4) dimethylaniline and (5) o-chlorotoluene; from triethyl aluminium, calcium hydroxide, ferric chloride, titanium tetrachloride and (8) toluene; and from triethyl aluminium, magnesium hydroxide, aluminium trichloride, xylene and (10) tetra n-butoxy titanium ; and the sequential polymerization of propylene and ethylene with a catalyst as in (1).
