Abstract
1,255,350. Data terminal. BURROUGHS CORP. 29 Oct., 1969 [29 Oct., 1968], No. 53024/69. Heading G4A. A terminal, for use in a digital electric information handling system in which the terminal is operatively connected to a control processor can operate in three separate modes. In the first off-line mode information is entered and printed via a keyboard but not transmitted to the processor; in the second (on line unattended) mode the processor completely controls the terminal and transmits information to the terminal for print-out and receives back in echo fashion, the transmitted information to check its correctness; in the third (on line) mode information is entered at the keyboard, transmitted to the processor, and information is received from the processor. A number of terminals are connected to the processor by telephone lines for use in a banking system. The mode is selected using the keyboard which causes a ASC11 coded signal to be sent to the processor which in turn sends back a signal which lights an appropriate lamp. Information is entered on the keyboard using alpha keys for characters which generate a 7 bit ASC11 code signal having a simple parity bit, and numeric keys, which generate a signal using Hamming coding. A recirculating storage register operating on a time division multiplex basis is used for synchronizing the operating speed of the terminal with the speed of transmission over the lines. It simultaneously handles information being received from the processor, information being transmitted by the terminal station and information being processed thereby. The processor successively polls the terminals until a terminal indicates it is ready to go on line. Other features include a dynamicizer for the code signals, the use of binary to octal conversion, MOSFET's, entry of information into the processor by paper tape, punched card or magnetic tape, and a clock pulse generator for each terminal, the clock pulses being derived from a crystal oscillator (Fig. 4, not shown). An interrupt key is also provided.
