Abstract

1,254,711. Protective apparatus. INTERNATIONAL RECTIFIER CO. (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd. 25 Aug., 1969 [25 June, 1968], No. 30217/68. Heading H2H. An arrangement for protecting elements in a load circuit 10, e.g. semi-conductor elements, comprises at least one capacitor 12, connected to the load circuit by way of a rectifier bridge 11, the capacitor 12 having a non-linear resistive component such as one or more Zener diodes 14 connected in parallel therewith, the arrangement being such that the Zener diode 14 discharges the capacitor 12 over a longer period than the period during which the capacitor charges from the load circuit, the characteristics of the Zener diode 14 being such that it passes only a small current under normal conditions of the load circuit 10 and a progressively higher discharge current when the voltage across the capacitor rises due to an over-voltage transient in the load circuit 10. Resistors 13, 16, 17 are provided for current limiting purposes whilst resistor 15 is provided to discharge the capacitor when the apparatus is switched off. More than one capacitor may be provided each with its own discharge circuit and the non-linear resistor may be a selenium diode. A three phase embodiment is described.
