Abstract

125,460. Williams, E. T. Aug. 11, 1916. Lamp signals.-A device for indicating to an aviator at night the position of the aerodrome, the direction of the wind, and a safe landing angle, comprises lamps arranged in rows and capable of elevation and training, each row projecting beams of different colour at a different inclination to the ground with respect to the other rows. A pit is formed to accommodate a turntable 2 carrying three rows of lamps 4, 4<1>, 4<2> adapted to project beams, at different adjustable angles, through glass screens 5, 5<1>, 5<2>. The screens 5, 5<1> are mounted in pivoted frames controlled by springs 6 and connected to sliding parts 7, 7<1> so as to yield in the event of a machine running over the apparatus. The screens are of different colour and the turntable can be turned by hand, or automatically by means controlled by a wind-vane, to indicate the direction of the wind. A lamp 8, which may project a fixed or a revolving beam, indicates the position of the aerodrome. The aviator flies towards the apparatus, keeping the central row of lights in view. When a wind vane is used, it may operate through contacts controlling two electromotors, one motor operating the turntable and the other a follow-up device for bringing the contacts into a neutral position again.
