Abstract

1,253,994. Measuring width photoelectrically. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. July 30, 1969 [Aug. 1, 1968], No. 36841/68. Heading G1A. Apparatus for detecting and/or measuring the width of a strip of material comprises means to pass a beam of radiation past both edges of the material so as to be partially obstructed thereby and photo-electric means for detecting the resultant flux density, the path traversed by the beam including two objective lenses positioned on opposite sides of a central stop and two auxiliary lenses positioned with the stop at their focal points. As shown light from a lamp 11 passes through a diffuser 10 and a condenser lens 12 to provide a uniform intensity beam at one edge 13 of a moving strip 5 the width of which is being monitored. That portion of the beam that is not obstructed by this edge falls on a mask D1 in the form of an aperture having parallel edges at right angles to the edge of the strip. The attenuated beam passes through a lens 20, is reflected at a mirror 18 passes through a lens 14 and arrives as a collimated beam at a central stop 22. With the exception of a photo-cell 23 in place of the lamp 11 and diffuser 11 the apparatus is symmetrical about the central stop and the beam continues via lenses 15, 21 and 24, a mirror 19 and a mask D 2 to the photo-cell 23 after further obstruction by the other edge 17 of the strip. The width of the image and thus its flux is proportional to the difference between the distance between the axis of the lenses 20 and 21 and the width of the strip i.e. the output of the photo-cell is inversely proportional to the width of the strip. To cope with strips in slightly different width ranges the source unit 1 and components D1, 14, 18 and 20 may be moved in one direction and the detector unit 3 and components 15, 19 and 21 moved in the other direction. An alternative embodiment which can deal with strips in various width ranges is described. In this embodiment the mirrors 18 and 19 are large and intersect each other. By re-positioning all other path element the path length can be maintained constant.
