A gripping device for inserting twist into yarn coming from an open end twisting head comprises a radially clamp grip 1 through which the yarn can slide and which is mounted in a rotatable grip holder forming a chamber 9, 9a. A pneumatic yarn insertion device 20, 21 is provided downstream of the gripping device and has an inlet 23 into which a yarn end can be sucked and an outlet 22 coaxial with the gripping device 1, the grip holder having a terminal portion 15 which surrounds at least the outlet 22. As shown the gripping device comprises curved flexible filaments 4 mounted in a disc 10 slidable on splines 11 within the support device 3 which is rotatable in bearings 16, 17 and rotatable by a band and pulley arrangement 18, 19. A stationary tube 20 is arranged within the portion 15 and within tube 20 is a further tube 21 supplied with compressed air. When threading up the grip compressed air is passed through tube 21 so as to cause suction at inlet 23 and the yarn end 27 to be drawn into tube 20. Chamber 9a becomes pressurised and the disc 10 is thus lifted to cause a tube 14 on lid 12 to be forced between the filaments 4 and spread them apart. Thus a passageway is produced through which the yarn end is blown. When the end is joined to the open end forming surface the compressed air is turned off and the disc 10 falls to allow the filament 4 to grip the yarn. The rethreading is effected without stopping rotation of the grip holder 3. In a further form in which the grip holder needs to be made stationary for rethreading the filaments 35 (see Fig. 5), of the grip are mounted in a head which is radially slotted to allow the filaments to be radially displaced. In addition it is formed at one side with a sector shaped slot 38. Thus when the yarn end is blown upwards from the outlet of pipe 20 it passes through slot 38 and when tension is placed on the yarn it is displaced sideways forcing a way through the filaments 35 until it lies centrally of all the filaments and is symmetrically gripped. The grip holder 3 can then be rotated.
