Abstract

1,253,031. Companders. R. M. DOLBY. 1 Jan., 1969 [10 Jan., 1968], No. 1540/68. Heading H4R. In a modification of the compander system of Specification 1,120,541 in the compressor the signal in the further path 10 is derived from the output of the adding network 12 and in the expander the signal in the further path 14 is derived from the input to the subtractor 16. The further path, as in the prior application, may include a number of parallel limiting circuits operating at different levels and/or on different frequency bands and may include tuned circuits to reject the carrier frequency in carrier systems, e.g. colour television systems. Fig. 6 shows a simple expander, which is of application to a television video signal and is an inverted form of the expander of Fig. 2 providing limiting and low frequency discrimination in the further path the signal from which is combined with that from the direct path via R1. For colour television a parallel resonant subcarrier rejector can replace or be connected in series with the capacitor. A down turning characteristic may be obtained by combining in opposition the signals from two further paths having the same limiting level but different slopes up to the limiting level.
