Abstract

125,299. Marillier, F. W., and Champeney, C. C. Aug. 2,1918. Lubricant conveyed by mechanical means.- Lubricant is applied to a railway-vehicle axle or other shaft by a hollow roller mounted in a frame which has a curved base resting with line contact on the floor of the oil-box. The roller a, Figs. 1 and 3, rotates on a fixed spindle c connected by hangers d to a pair of leaf springs e resting on wings f<1> of a U-shaped sheet-metal frame formed with a curved base f<3>. The sides of the wings f<1> are bent over at f<7> to prevent the springs and the rcller from rising unduly. The frame has apertures where necessary to allow the roller to dip into oil. The spindle c may have slots in its ends in which the springs e are fixed, the hangers d being dispensed with. Side members f<6> of the frame are turned in at f<9> to serve as scrapers for removing surplus oil from the roller, and the parts f<7> may scrape the ends of the roller to divert oil to its bearings on the spindle. Fig. 5 shows a modification, in which the spindle c is carried by pedestals g on a plate h supported by curved springs e<2> resting on the' floor of the oil-box, the springs being fixed to the plate at one end only.
