Abstract
1,252,649. Phototropic glasses. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 4 March, 1969, No.11369/69. Heading C1M. Transparent photochromic (phototropic) glass having a high optical density when present in thin cross-section is produced by: (a) melting a batch consisting of (in weight per cent) 40-76 SiO 2 ; 4-26 B 2 O 3 ; 4-26 Al 2 O 3 ; at least one alkali metal oxide taken from the following in the proportion indicated, that is: 2-8 Li 2 O, 4-15 Na 2 O, 6-20 K 2 O, 8-25 Rb 2 O, 10-30 Cs 2 O; silver in a content of greater than 0À7 %; at least one halogen selected from Cl, Br and I, the total halogen being greater than 0À6%; the sum of the recited constituents being at least 85% of the total glass composition and the balance, if any consisting of other compatible constituents; and (b) simultaneously chilling the melt sufficiently rapidly to a temperature below the transformation range to prevent growth of large silver halide crystals and shaping an article therefrom having a thickness not above 0À02 inch. The chilling occurs in less than 5 seconds, and may be performed by drawing the melt through metal rollers to form a sheet. The silver and halogens contents preferably do not exceed 1À5 and 2% respectively.
