A projector receives a film cartridge containing a film in a continuous loop in an aperture 61, and has a driving-shaft 97 provided with a clutch driving member having a frusto-conical end-face which engages a complementary driven member in the cartridge, the engagement constituting the sole drive transmission between the projector and the film cartridge. The cartridge is inserted, is locked in position against stops 67 by assembly 62 which is pressed downwardly by a manually rotatable cam 64, magnetic pick-up heads 68 and 70 engaging a sound track and a control signal track respectively. A heavy flywheel 72 on the shaft of drum 71 provides constant film speed past the two heads. The film is twisted in the cartridge from a vertical plane at the pick-up heads to a horizontal plane at the vertical optical axis of projection lens 82, a mirror directing light from the lamp upwardly through the film. A claw and gear assembly 95 is driven by the shaft of the belt-driven shutter pulley 57 and includes a gear train driving the clutch 97 which engages film sprocket 162 in the cartridge. Shutter 100 is mounted on the shaft coaxially with an edge and face cam 102 engaged by follower 104 of the film advance claw. A cooling blower 58 is also carried on the pulley shaft. A framing adjustment of the claw arm is provided. Screen (23), Fig.3 (not shown), is erected when the hinged lid (21) of the projector is raised and receives the projected film images by way of aperture (38) and mirror (40). A fine focusing control for lens 82, Fig. 6, is provided. The cartridge containing two belt-connected film sprockets, one on each side of the gate 77, which are driven through clutch 97, forms the subject of Application No. 50208/69. Insertion of the cartridge into the projector closes microswitch 47 to energize the electric circuits.
