Abstract
1,252,442. Separating hydrocarbons chromatographically. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 10 Feb., 1969 [21 Feb., 1968; 24 July, 1968], Nos. 8407/68 and 35237/68. Heading B1X. Mixtures comprising naphthene and paraffin hydrocarbons containing up to 11 carbon atoms are separated chromatographically by type and into carbon number fractions by passage in the vapour phase with a carrier gas, e.g. He, N 2 or H 2 , through a column of a molecular sieve having the crystal structure of faujasite and a pore diameter >5, and then successively eluting the fractions by suitably temperature programming the column with time at 40-250C above the average boiling point of the highest carbon number component present. If aromatics are also present, two columns are used, the first being a shorter one in which some or all of the sieve is in the base exchanged form with sodium ions replaced by calcium ions, and wherein the aromatics are retained for subsequent recovery by backflushing. This backflushing with carrier gas is preferably performed before the first of the hydrocarbon fractions passed with the residual stream emerges from the second column. The sieve in the column used for separating the naphthenes and paraffins is suitably in the sodium form, is preferably Type 10X or 13X and has been deactivated with 2-3% NaOH solution.
