[Also in Division G4] A punched card reader comprises a cassette 3, having a plurality of sections B, C, D, E, each of which can accommodate a stack of punched cards 5, and a slider 2 mounted for movement within a housing 1 upon which the cassette 3 is movably supported, the slider 2 being formed with a shallow recess 2a having a depth such as to receive a single card and being associated with sensing contacts 4a and an electromagnet 7. In operation with the cassette positioned as shown, the lowermost card 5a in section D is received by the recess in slider 2a which is then moved in the direction of arrow A so that the card passes the contacts 4a which sense the punched holes; with further movement, the sensed card 5a is placed below the stack of cards in section C when, upon receipt of a signal from an evaluating unit the electromagnet 7 is energized so that its armature 7a moves upwards through an aperture in the surface of the slider 2 (Fig. 2, not shown) to push the card 5a into the section C, whereupon the slider returns to its initial position to receive another card from section D. Each stack of cards is loaded with a weight 6 having a punched hole code in its bottom surface. Thus after the last card in section D has been properly transferred to the stack in section C the weight 6 drops into the recess 2a (Fig. 3, not shown) but a major portion remains within its section so that when the next feed movement of slider 2 commences the cassette itself is stepped on by one section division. At the same time the hole code of the weight 6 is sensed by the contacts 4a, thus informing the evaluating unit that the stack of cards in section D has been exhausted.
